Just once in all our buying trips and searches in hundreds of galleries and markets, we found these highly unusual, probably rare, books pictured above. They were created by an artist, Alfonso Garcia Tellez, in one of the primary villages in Puebla where the paper is produced, San Pablito Pahuatlan. The books consist of stiff covers and a continuous strip of fine, light-colored amate paper that is folded acordian style (in the tradition of ancient codicils). The front cover and most pages have dark-amate cutouts attached. The cutouts primarily depict various deities and human characteristics. The text is written by hand in upper case printing. The language is Spanish but with some native and local terminology. The books measure 5.5"x7".
Papel Amate is paper that is handmade from ficus trees in the State of Puebla east of Mexico City. Most of this paper is sent to the state of Guerrero southwest of Mexico City to produce the Papel Amate paintings that we feature. Its production began in pre-Colombian times, being used for ancient codicils and other documents.
